Changes Coming to Market Street in Palmyra

The days of Market Street being known more for teeth-rattling bumps and potholes than as a gateway to the community appear to be numbered.

On Tuesday, the Burlington County Bridge Commission authorized a shared-services initiative to assist the borough with a four-month project aimed at revitalizing the Market Street corridor.

PLAY BALL: PALMYRA REMEMBERS LENA BLACKBURNE

Russell “Lena” Blackburne played baseball for the Palmyra Field Club way back in the early 1900’s and was the first kid ever in Burlington County to make it to the Major Leagues. In 1938, as a coach for the Philadelphia Athletics, he changed the game of baseball when he discovered the mud he harvested from a secret Delaware River tributary took the shine off new baseballs, giving the pitcher better control. His legacy continues to this day!

IF YOU SEE A COLLAR, HOLLER!

Palmyra has hundreds of London plane trees lining its streets. These are the trees with mottled, green and beige bark, sometimes called butternuts or sycamores. London planes often drop their branches, but before they fall, a dark ring or collar appears on the limb. If you see a London tree with a dead branch and a dark collar, contact the Palmyra Shade Tree Commission at http://www.boroughofpalmyra.com/treerequest
